It’s probably all of the above and more! And these are just some of the reasons why I wrote this latest book. And how does it differ from my other books? Let me explain. The 1. Day Detox Dietgrew out of a deeper understanding of the biology of food addiction and how it is so often at the root of people’s failure to change their behavior and their diet. The fact that we eat 1. America makes it impossible for people to control their behavior around food. These substances are highly addictive; in fact, they are eight times as addictive as cocaine. Rats will keep eating sugar even while they are getting electric shocks to make them stop! The truth is that we blame people for being overweight, but it’s not their fault. Our taste buds, hormones, brain chemistry and hormones have been hijacked by the food industry. The 1. 0- Day Detox Diet helps reset your hormones and brain chemistry and turns off inflammation in just 1. These days, sugar is found in almost everything, but it can be detrimental to our health in excess. Here's a 10 day sugar detox to reset your mind and body. The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet (2014) is an unprocessed, low-carb detox diet. Preparation phase: Come off caffeine, alcohol, sweetened beverages, and. Six hundred people did a trial of the program—they not only lost more than 4,0. There is no drug on the planet that can do that. Food is the most powerful medicine on the planet. The Blood Sugar Solution 1. Day Detox Diet book is for you if you: want a brief but compelling glimpse into how powerful the affect of food is on your mind- body system and how quickly eating real food can shift your health and your weight. FLC Syndrome (feel like crap) and want to feel better in 1. If you have followed me for a while, you know that I am the chairman of The Institute of Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is a personalized approach to address the root causes of disease. It introduces a new way of thinking that uses food as the primary medicine. It is medicine by cause, not by symptom. We treat the system, not the symptoms. Functional Medicine is the science of creating health. And it works across the entire spectrum of chronic disease to improve function and optimize health. In fact, the very notion of disease has become obsolete, as we understand the root causes and how everything is connected. To understand more about this model, watch my TEDMED talk on Functional Medicine. My books and programs are focused on healing different conditions and are about using food and the principles of healing in different ways. And as the science evolves, there is a deeper understanding of how that works and how to bring this healing to millions. Let’s now review some of my other books to see how they’re different and to learn which one may be best for you: The Blood Sugar Solution and The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook (2. The Blood Sugar Solutionand companion cookbook are for you if you: have pre- diabetes, type 2 diabetes or have weight to lose and are looking for a lifestyle (not another diet) to get you or keep you off your medications. Functional Medicine, intrigued by the seven keys to wellness and want to see how this medicine works for you. Try The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook if any of these meals appeal to your senses: Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai. Blue Cheese Cowboy Burger. Double Peanut Butter Chocolate Cups. The epidemic of type 2 diabetes and pre- diabetes has exploded. In the last ten years, we went from one in ten kids with pre- diabetes or type 2 diabetes to nearly one in four kids. And now, one in two Americans has pre- diabetes or type 2 diabetes. I felt we needed a comprehensive plan to address the root cause of “diabesity,” which is insulin resistance. It is not just our food that causes diabesity. Many factors are often missed, including not only our high sugar intake but also hidden triggers of inflammation, including environmental toxins, unhealthy gut flora, food allergens like gluten and dairy, stress, nutritional deficiencies and more. The book and the cookbook provide a comprehensive plan to get to the root of this epidemic and reverse diabesity. The Ultra. Simple Diet (2. The Ultra. Simple Diet book is for you if you: have a sneaking suspicion that the food you are eating is triggering inflammatory conditions, such as eczema, allergies, asthma, headaches, joint stiffness, arthritis and digestive problems or if you just feel sick and tired. One of the most important healing tools in Functional Medicine for a whole host of chronic inflammatory and toxic symptoms is a comprehensive elimination diet that eliminates the most common food allergies and sensitivities. I use this all the time in my practice for my patients, and I realized they needed a simple, practical guide for how to do this. Most people don’t connect the dots between how they feel and the food they eat. Eliminating the most common food sensitivities (gluten, dairy, eggs, corn, nightshades, citrus, etc.) and adding whole, fresh food can help people reboot in as little as one week. This book was a blockbuster sleeper success. If you have allergies, autoimmune, digestive problems or just feel lousy, The Ultra. Simple Diet is a great way to reboot and heal and identify which foods are a problem for you. The Ultra. Mind Solution (2. The Ultra. Mind Solution book is for you if you: want to understand how nutrition and lifestyle affect your brain function and want to follow a plan to optimize your brain health. Everything in the body is connected. As I began treating the body as a whole system, I observed that when I treated people’s stomach issues or allergies or skin problems, improved their metabolism or helped them detoxify from heavy metals or optimized their nutrient levels, such as vitamin B1. B6, magnesium, vitamin D, or omega- 3 fats, those patients had dramatic improvements in their mental health, including depression, anxiety, brain fog, as well as attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, autism and even memory loss and dementia. Most understand the mind- body connection but few were talking about the body- mind connection—how the body affects the brain. The Ultra. Mind Solution is one of my favorite books because it really goes into the science of Functional Medicine, and I am a bit of a science geek. But it also provides a pathway for healing so much that goes wrong in our head. If you have a brain, read this book! I’m sure you can see a common thread here regarding these nutritional principles. They are similar, because the science shows us that there is really only one basic good “human diet.” It’s not like one diet prevents cancer but another prevents diabetes and yet another prevents heart attacks, dementia or autoimmune diseases. A whole- foods, low- glycemic, predominately plant- based, phytonutrient- rich diet is the foundation of health and prevents and can treat most chronic diseases. I hope these books mean as much to you as they do to me. My wish is for them to make a lasting impact on your health, so that you can trust your body’s innate ability to heal given the right ingredients—healthy food, some fun movement, real relaxation and deep, authentic love. The diet is not strictly plant based. There are recipes containing lean animal protein. But, there are plenty of recipes for vegetarians and vegans. So, there is something for everybody. Dr Hyman and his team invited me and two readers to participate in a beta test group to follow his 1. Day Detox Diet program with other bloggers and patients. I posted on my facebook page asking for volunteers and was overwhelmed with people wanting to change their lives with this program. Everybody was a worthy and deserving candidate, and I was so overwhelmed wanting to give a spot to everybody that I had Dr Hyman's team choose Melissa Giammarco Longmire and Rachel Joy Cole to take part. Currently, we are in Day 5 of the program and I feel absolutely fantastic. Prior to starting this week, we were all sent a copy of the book, pre- detox instructions, all required supplements, and a motivating conference call. Every day we begin with a daily phone call with Dr Hyman and his staff, as well as emails and a private facebook group that replicates the kind of support you can expect with the online program. What I love about this book and progam is that it truly a holistic approach to detoxing. It is a complete reset of your body chemistry and emotional reality. Yes, the book contains an entire menu plan (core plan or adventure plan) with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that have been carefully developed to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and deliver nutrient density as well as fabulous flavor. But, in addition to this, you exercise (brisk walking is recommended), meditate, practice deep breathing exercises, record your body measurements, how much sleep you get the night before (and the quality of that sleep), and journal. Each day has an intention. For example: Day 1: Satisfy, Day 2: Detox, Day 3: Empty, Day 4: Move, and Day 5: Listen. There are specific questions and your record how you feel and what emotions come up as you set your intentions. Journaling is really powerful, and engaging in an honest dialogue with yourself is confronting but illuminating. Listening... I should do it more often. A lot of fear has been coming up for me. As I head into one of the biggest years of my life, I am confronting my fear that I will disappoint myself and my family and colleagues, and the fear that nobody will like my book and want to hear anything I have to say. Basically fear that I won't be enough. Yeah.. that old chestnut. Cleansing is an emotional journey, and each cleanse is different depending on how you enter the experience. I've been eating a clean, gluten free, alkaline plant based diet for many years, and already abstain from gluten, white refined foods, refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and eat every little starchy vegetables, grains, and natural sweeteners that can all lead to sugar spikes and weight gain. I also engage in oil pulling, dry skin brushing, detox baths, walk, hike, practice yoga, stretch, and meditate. This . Basically, allowing life to unfold knowing I have the tools in my toolbox to move forward no matter what comes my way. And having fun with it all and enjoying the journey instead of worrying. However, my emotional state directly affects my food choices. My overwhelming take away so far? I have realized that my . Yes, whole grains and akaline grains - quinoa, millet, and amaranth. But, still complex carbohydrates that convert to sugar. When I'm feeling deflated, down, scared, or upset, I crave grains. I've also realized that I've been taking my health for granted and haven't been growing and expanding on my health journey. I've been under an enormous amount of stress for the last year with Scott's cancer diagnosis, writing my book, and maintaining my recording and work schedule. As a result, I just haven't been able to turn my mind off, and have been suffering from bouts of insomnia and surviving on about 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night. Since starting the program I have been sleeping better than I have in years. After soaking in the recommended nightly detox bath with epsom salts, baking soda, and lavender oil, I have felt so relaxed and decompressed and have been sleeping 8 hours a night. I feel like a new person! Our blood sugar levels and internal chemistry really affects our sleep patterns and ability to rest, recharge, and regenerate. Health is a daily practice of mindfulness and self love - an evolving journey that involves listening to your body, attending to your thoughts and emotions, and setting an intention for wellness. Dr Hyman's program is not just a collection of recipes, supplements, and exercise guidelines. It's a template for mindful living. I highly recommend this book and program. Get a sneak preview of the book here. I love that Dr Hyman begins every day and each day of the program with a nutrient dense smoothie full of protein, vitamins and minerals, healthy fats and oils, and antioxidants. This recipe is Dr Hyman's signature smoothie containing low sugar berries and alkaline nuts and seeds. This is delicious and will keep you feeling sustained all morning long. There is also a yummy kiwi and chia seed smoothie, ginger and cucumber smoothie, spiced almond smoothie, and almond and strawberry smoothie in the book. I have been rotating them so far for diversity. I will share more of Dr Hyman's recipes and my experience next week. Watch my interview with Dr Hyman here. The really potent probiotics require refrigeration. If you have capsules, break the shell and release the powder. Unsweetened probiotic- rich liquids like kefirs (water, coconut water, milk varieties) or kombucha make wonderful health- promoting additions to shakes, too.*Celtic Sea Salt - I add a pinch (or more) of this alkalizing, mineral- rich salt to all smoothies to boost the natural flavor of fruits and veggies; temper the acidity of sweet fruits and sweeteners; stimulate the lymphatic system; replenish electrolytes; aid digestion; and help the body access energy. I do not recommend adding common table salt which is generally heated to extreme temperatures, iodized, bleached, processed, and refined. This salt does not have the same benefits. If you have a health condition that requires you to limit your sodium intake consult your doctor before adding salt to your smoothies. Day Sugar Detox (To Reset Your Mind And Body)Health.
